Where you focus is where you’ll end up

Did you ever think your life would turn out this way?

Was it part of ‘the plan’ to be doing what you’re doing?

Probably not, because the plan develops as we go. There are so many things that we didn’t expect, didn’t take into account, had no idea would have so much impact on us and our circumstances. So many dreams we expected to succeed fell by the wayside. Passion for a cause overtakes us, often unawares and we find ourselves in strange territory.

Tough things happen to all of us. Bad things happen to good people, and even more irritating, good things happen to bad people. The good book says that the rain falls on everyone, whether they deserve it or not. The same could be said for droughts.

The way a person deals with the drought or the deluge is the reason they become who they end up to be. Who we are comes out of how we act, and how we act develops out of what we think. What we think springs from where we habitually let our mind go to. And therein lies the rub!

So in the end, what you’re doing now, or what you’re aiming at, is the development of your journey thus far.

What you repeatedly focus on is the direction you’re heading.

The focus of your regular conversation, whether celebration or complaint, is currently guiding the direction of your heart and therefore your life. It’s great to be with someone whose resilience is expressed in their choices to bounce back from irritations and hardships and keep realigning their focus toward hope. Conversely, it’s remarkably draining to be in an atmosphere of blame and shame where the good is constantly being smothered because brokenness keeps floating to the top.

The good news is that every day is a new opportunity to make the choice to live with Hope as the anchor of your soul.  The wind and the waves threaten to overwhelm, but Hope provides an anchor that can not only keep you afloat in the storms, but also in the every days of life.

Love out loud. Live with joy, even when life is tough. Joy isn’t the absence of heartache, but the presence of Hope.

Emily Dickinson says:

Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune, without the words, And never stops at all.

Regardless of whether you expected to end up where you are, I can guarantee you that if you decide to think and live on the side of hope, your future will be worth living in.
